Formula and calculation logic
Tip amount
Tip = Tip base × T ÷ 100
The tip base is the bill before tax, or the bill plus tax when “after tax” is selected. This is why two people can enter the same percentage and still leave different amounts.
Total bill
Total = Bill + Tax + Tip
Tax is added to the bill before the tip when tipping after tax. The total is what you actually pay.
Per-person amount
Per person = Total ÷ People
The calculator divides the total and the tip by the number of people. Each share is rounded for display; adding up rounded shares can differ from the total by one cent.
Worked example
100 bill, 18% tip, two people
A 100.00 bill with no tax, an 18% tip and two people splitting it.
Tip: 100.00 × 18 ÷ 100 = 18.00
Total: 100.00 + 18.00 = 118.00
Per person: 118.00 ÷ 2 = 59.00
The tip is 18.00, the total is 118.00, and each person pays 59.00 including a 9.00 tip share.
20% tip after 10% tax, four people
A 100.00 bill, 10% sales tax and a 20% tip calculated on the post-tax amount.
Tax: 10.00
Tip base: 110.00
Tip: 110.00 × 20 ÷ 100 = 22.00
Total: 100.00 + 10.00 + 22.00 = 132.00
The total is 132.00, or 33.00 per person for four people, with 5.50 of the tip per person.
Edge cases and accuracy
Tipping before or after tax
Tipping before tax uses only the bill amount. Tipping after tax uses the bill plus tax, so the tip is slightly higher for the same percentage.
Rounding and split bills
Each per-person figure is rounded to the currency’s smallest unit for display. Four people sharing 100.00 exactly may each see 25.00, while an amount that does not divide evenly can leave a one-cent difference.
Number of people
At least one person is required, and the calculator accepts up to 100. A zero or fractional number of people is rejected rather than producing an infinite per-person amount.
Customs vary
Tip percentages are a local custom, not a legal requirement. The calculator applies the percentage you choose and does not judge what is appropriate for a country or venue.
Frequently asked questions
Should I calculate the tip before or after tax?+−
It depends on local custom. Tipping on the pre-tax bill is common in some places, while others tip on the total including tax. The calculator lets you choose and shows the difference.
How is the per-person amount calculated?+−
The bill, tax and tip are added together, then divided by the number of people. The same division is applied to the tip so each person can see their share.
Can I enter a custom tip percentage?+−
Yes. Use the preset buttons for common percentages or type any value from 0 to 100 in the tip field.
Does the currency selector convert money?+−
No. It changes the symbol and the number of decimal places shown, for example whole yen for JPY. No exchange rate is applied.
Why do the per-person amounts not add up exactly?+−
Each share is rounded for display. When an amount does not divide evenly, the rounded shares can differ from the exact total by one cent.
Is a tip required?+−
No. Tipping is voluntary and customary expectations differ by country and situation. The calculator only performs the arithmetic for the percentage you choose.
