Discount Calculator

This calculator turns a percentage discount into the amount you actually pay: the discount amount, the reduced price, and the total saved. Add a second stacked discount or a sales tax rate to see the full price breakdown.

Your data is processed locally in your browser and is not uploaded to our server.

%

Applied to the already-reduced price, not added to the first percentage.

%

Calculated on the price after all discounts.

How to use this tool

  1. 1 Enter the original price and the discount percentage. The results update as you type.
  2. 2 Optionally add a second discount. It is applied to the already-reduced price, not added to the first percentage.
  3. 3 Optionally enter a sales tax rate; tax is calculated on the price after all discounts.
  4. 4 Choose a currency symbol for display. It changes the symbol and decimal places only, not the numbers themselves.

Formula and calculation logic

Discount amount

Discount = Original price × D ÷ 100

The discount amount is the part of the original price represented by the percentage. A 20% discount on 199.99 removes 39.998 before rounding.

Sale price

Sale price = Original price − Discount

Subtract the discount amount from the original price. This is the price before any tax is added.

Two stacked discounts

Price = Original × (1 − D1 ÷ 100) × (1 − D2 ÷ 100)

The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so the percentages multiply rather than add. 25% then 10% off is a 32.5% total reduction, not 35%.

Sales tax

Final = Sale price × (1 + T ÷ 100)

Tax is applied to the discounted price, not to the original price. The tax amount is what you pay on top of the sale price.

Worked example

20% off a 199.99 item

A jacket costs 199.99 and is discounted by 20%.

  1. 199.99 × 20 ÷ 100 = 39.998
  2. 199.99 − 39.998 = 159.992
  3. Displayed: 40.00 saved, 159.99 to pay

The sale price is 159.99 and you save 40.00. The calculator keeps 39.998 internally and rounds only for display.

25% off, then another 10% off

An 80.00 item has a 25% sale discount and a further 10% coupon.

  1. 80.00 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20.00
  2. 80.00 − 20.00 = 60.00
  3. 60.00 × 10 ÷ 100 = 6.00
  4. 60.00 − 6.00 = 54.00

You pay 54.00 and save 26.00 in total. The effective discount is 32.5%, not the 35% you would get by adding the two percentages.

Edge cases and accuracy

Stacked discounts are not additive

Each percentage after the first applies to a smaller base. Adding the numbers gives the wrong answer: 25% then 10% is 32.5%, while 25% + 10% would suggest 35%.

Rounding and the smallest currency unit

Amounts are kept exact internally and rounded only when displayed. For a 199.99 item at 20% off, the exact discount is 39.998; the display shows 40.00, but later calculations still use the exact value.

100% discount

A 100% discount reduces the price to zero. If a tax rate is entered, tax on zero is zero, so the final price stays zero.

Tax is calculated on the discounted price

Sales tax is applied after every discount. Entering tax does not change the discount amount or the total saved; it only adds the tax line to the final price.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the discount amount? +

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100. For 20% off 199.99, the discount is 199.99 × 20 ÷ 100 = 39.998, which displays as 40.00.

Why is 25% off plus 10% off not 35% off? +

The second discount is calculated on the reduced price, which is smaller than the original. The combined factor is 0.75 × 0.90 = 0.675, so the total reduction is 32.5%.

Is tax applied before or after the discount? +

After. The calculator applies sales tax to the price that remains after every discount, which is the usual order for retail pricing.

Does the currency selector convert money? +

No. It only changes the symbol and the number of decimal places shown. No exchange rate is applied, and the numbers stay exactly as entered.

What happens with a 100% discount? +

The sale price becomes zero. Any tax rate applies to zero, so the final price is also zero. The total saved equals the original price.

Why does my manual total differ by one cent? +

Rounding each intermediate amount can shift a total by one cent. This calculator keeps full precision until the final display, then rounds to the currency’s smallest unit. Rounding every step separately may produce a slightly different last digit.
